Agartala, 22nd May 2026: Tension gripped the campus of Tripura University on Thursday as students and members of the ruling party’s student wing staged protests over the recently published fifth semester examination results of the four-year undergraduate degree programme.
Students alleged serious irregularities in the publication of the results, claiming that many candidates were declared failed due to errors in the “form fill-up” process. The issue surfaced after results of the fifth semester examinations conducted across 25 general degree colleges affiliated to Tripura University were announced.
According to agitating students, forms for the fifth semester examinations had been filled up nearly three-and-a-half months before the examinations were held. However, after the results were declared, many students discovered that their forms had allegedly not been processed correctly, leading to failure in the examinations.
Students further claimed that several candidates who had backlog papers in the second and fourth semesters were also shown as failed in all subjects of the fifth semester, sparking widespread resentment among the student community.
Following the controversy, protests erupted in several colleges under Tripura University. On Thursday, activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad demonstrated at the university campus demanding immediate corrective measures. The student leaders also met Acting Vice-Chancellor Senior Professor Shyamal Das and urged the university administration to resolve the issue without delay.
After the meeting, ABVP leaders told reporters that all affected students should immediately be declared passed in the fifth semester examinations. They warned that if the issue was not resolved, they would launch a gherao movement at the university.
Student leaders argued that under the policy guidelines of the University Grants Commission for the four-year undergraduate programme, students should not fail due to technical or procedural errors related to form submission. They claimed that the university authorities were obligated to allow such students to continue their studies and appear in subsequent semesters.
Meanwhile, officials from the Ministry of Education reportedly intervened in the matter on Thursday evening, and necessary instructions were communicated to the university authorities.
When contacted, Senior Professor Samir Kumar Sil, Registrar of Tripura University, along with Acting Controller of Examinations Professor Chinmoy Roy, assured that issues related to faulty form submissions would be resolved by May 30. They stated that no student would ultimately fail solely because of form fill-up errors and that all affected students would be allowed to appear in the sixth semester examinations.
Sources in the Education Ministry said the university would also have to take a decision regarding students with backlog papers and those shown as failed in all fifth semester subjects in accordance with UGC norms.
It is also learnt that Tripura University officials held a high-level meeting with a software company on Thursday to resolve technical problems related to the university’s “Sarmath Software” system, which allegedly contributed to the confusion. Officials indicated that the issue is expected to be resolved within the next few days.
