Agartala, 24th May 2026 : Another road accident reportedly triggered by reckless driving occurred on National Highway-8 near Salthang Manu Village, where a Tata Punch and a Bolero pickup vehicle collided head-on, leaving a couple severely injured.
As per eyewitnesses and police officials, the injured couple was travelling towards Jolaibari in a Tata Punch car (TR08-E-0719) after visiting their in-laws’ residence. During the journey, a Bolero pickup vehicle (TR08-A-1619) coming from the opposite direction allegedly tried to switch lanes from the right side to the left, resulting in a direct collision between the two vehicles.
The impact of the crash left the couple seriously hurt. After receiving information about the accident, Tipra Motha South Zonal Joint Chairman Harendra Reang reached the accident site. Due to the delayed arrival of the fire service team, he, along with local residents, immediately rescued the injured victims and shifted them to the South District Hospital in his personal vehicle. The injured couple is currently receiving treatment there.
Soon after the incident, police personnel from Monpathar Police Station arrived at the spot and took both damaged vehicles into custody. According to the preliminary investigation, negligent driving appears to be the main reason behind the accident, though a detailed probe is currently underway.
The incident has once again raised concerns among local residents over the increasing number of accidents along this stretch of NH-8. Locals blame overspeeding and repeated traffic rule violations for the frequent mishaps and have demanded stricter monitoring and improved road safety measures from the administration.
