Husband detained for allegedly attacking wife with iron rod at Kathalia Market

Agartala, 2nd June 2026:   A 30-year-old man was detained by police after allegedly attacking his wife with an iron rod in broad daylight at the Kathalia commercial area of Sepahijala district, triggering concern among local residents.

The injured woman, identified as Rozina Begum (25) of Khadyakhala under Kathalia Gram Panchayat, had been living at her parental home with her child and earning a livelihood through various jobs. The accused, Rasul Mia (30), is a resident of Tamsabari in Sonamura subdivision.

According to local sources, the incident occurred on June 1 during the weekly market day. Rozina had reportedly gone to the Kathalia market to buy household essentials and was purchasing vegetables when her husband allegedly attacked her from behind, striking her on the head with an iron rod. She sustained serious injuries and collapsed at the spot.

Fire Service personnel from Kathalia rushed to the scene and shifted the injured woman to Kathalia Community Health Centre for treatment.

Police said the accused later surrendered at Jatrapur Police Station, where he was taken into custody. During preliminary questioning, he reportedly cited longstanding marital disputes.

Jatrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Partha Nath Bhowmik said legal proceedings have been initiated and a case is being registered against the accused. Police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident, which has sparked tension and outrage in the locality.
