Market committee leaders accused of selling government land at MG Bazar

Date:

Agartala, 7th June 2026: A major controversy has erupted at the Agartala Maharajganj Market, following allegations that members of the market committee illegally sold government land, leading to unrest and protests among local traders.

According to reports, a vacant plot behind a public toilet in Maharajganj Market had originally been allocated on a temporary basis to some traders under an initiative by the Agartala Municipal Corporation. After they vacated the area, the land reportedly remained unused.

It is alleged that three market committee leaders later sold the vacant government land—constructing and transferring two shop units to private buyers. One shop was reportedly sold for around Rs 20 lakh to a trader named Uttam Karmakar, while another was sold for approximately Rs 12 lakh to a small trader.

The issue came to light when construction work for permanent shop structures began on the disputed land. Central market committee members reportedly intervened and raised objections, triggering tensions on Sunday afternoon. A large group of traders gathered at Maharajganj Market, demanding strict action against the accused leaders.

Protesters have called for an immediate and thorough investigation, alleging that more individuals may be involved in the land transaction. They also accused the market committee of attempting to suppress the matter and avoid media attention.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement, while traders continue to demand accountability and legal action over the alleged misuse of government property at Maharajganj Market.
