Soil mafia defies administrative directives, residents protest

Date:

Agartala, 8th  June 2026:   Allegations of blatant disregard for administrative directives have surfaced in the Sadar subdivision after soil excavation and transportation activities reportedly continued despite orders from officials to halt the operation. Local residents have accused influential vested interests of damaging a vital rural road while prioritizing personal gains.

The controversy centers around the brick-paved road connecting Kanchanmala Nakul Choumuhani and Khamarpara, which has remained in poor condition for years. Residents claim that the road, already weakened due to years of neglect, was severely damaged last year when large quantities of soil were excavated from a nearby hillock once owned by the late Bimal Bhowmik and transported to a railway project site at Sekerkote. During the monsoon, the movement of heavy tipper trucks reportedly turned large sections of the road into a muddy stretch, forcing pedestrians to take alternative routes through nearby vegetation.

According to locals, a person identified as Sukhlal recently initiated what was described as a road repair project. However, residents alleged that the work was merely a pretext for further soil excavation and transportation. They claimed that only a small quantity of stones was used while large amounts of loose soil were spread on the road, raising concerns that the condition of the route would worsen during the rains.

When soil-laden tipper trucks resumed operations on Monday, angry residents contacted the Chief Minister’s helpline and informed Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Maniklal Das. Acting on the complaints, the SDM reportedly instructed the concerned officials to intervene. Bikramnagar Tehsildar Alok Bhattacharya later visited the site and ordered an immediate halt to the transportation of soil.

However, residents alleged that the operation resumed soon after the official left the area. Expressing frustration, locals have urged the SDM and the West Tripura District Magistrate to take strict action and permanently stop the excavation. They warned that if the activity continues and the road becomes unusable during the monsoon, they will launch a road blockade movement in protest.
