Agartala, 8th June 2026: The Sadar District Congress Committee on Monday staged a protest in front of the state power utility office in Agartala, raising several demands related to electricity services, public dissatisfaction over smart meters, increased power tariffs, and alleged corruption within the Electricity Department.
Addressing the gathering, Congress leaders criticized the state government’s handling of the power sector and highlighted what they described as persistent shortcomings in electricity services. They alleged that the implementation of smart meters has placed an additional financial burden on consumers and expressed concern over the overall quality and reliability of power supply in the state.
The protesters demanded the withdrawal of the increased electricity tariffs, the provision of uninterrupted and improved power services, and greater transparency in the functioning of the Electricity Department. They also called for an impartial investigation into allegations of corruption within the department.
Among those present at the demonstration was Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty. In his address, he criticized the government’s policies regarding electricity services, the smart meter project, and the recent hike in electricity charges. He urged the authorities to take immediate and effective measures to resolve the existing issues in the public interest and safeguard the interests of ordinary consumers.
The protest generated considerable political activity in the area but concluded peacefully without any reported untoward incidents.
