Cannabis suspect’s escape sparks bribery allegations against police at Belonia

Date:

Agartala, 9th June 2026:  A major controversy has erupted in Belonia following allegations that a youth detained with a large quantity of cannabis at Belonia Railway Station was allowed to escape in exchange for a bribe. The incident has sparked widespread public outrage, with local residents and eyewitnesses demanding a thorough and impartial investigation.

According to eyewitness accounts, Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel intercepted a suspicious vehicle near the railway station on Tuesday morning and reportedly recovered several kilograms of cannabis from a bag. While three occupants allegedly fled the scene, one youth was detained along with the seized contraband.

Witnesses claim that around 20 to 25 minutes later, Belonia Police Station Sub-Inspector Premjit Roy and Intelligence Branch personnel Nepal Nama arrived at the station in plainclothes. The detained youth and the recovered cannabis were reportedly taken inside the GRP office, while locals were prevented from entering.

Shortly afterwards, the youth allegedly ran out of the station and escaped. Locals allege that police personnel made no serious attempt to apprehend him. Some eyewitnesses and auto-rickshaw drivers have further alleged that the escape was facilitated through a financial transaction.

SI Premjit Roy and IB personnel Nepal Namah have strongly denied the allegations. With no official statement yet from the GRP, residents continue to question the role of the officials involved and are demanding a high-level inquiry into the incident.
