Agartala, 9th June 2026: A high-level delegation led by Kishor Barman, Minister for Higher Education, Government of Tripura, met Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Education, and senior officials of the Ministry of Education to deliberate on key issues concerning the development of higher education in Tripura.
During the meeting, the delegation emphasized the urgent need to resolve affiliation-related matters of newly established Government General Degree Colleges under Maharaja Bir Bikram University to ensure smooth academic administration and wider access to quality education. They also sought the nomination of a representative from the Ministry of Education to the Search Committee for appointing the Chairman of the State Higher Education Council.
Discussions included proposals for introducing and expanding skill and vocational courses in Government Degree Colleges in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur, aimed at enhancing employability and aligning with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The delegation further raised the issue of appointing a regular Vice-Chancellor for Tripura University, with the Union Minister assuring that the process would be expedited.
The Tripura Government also requested special financial assistance for establishing two new Government Universities and four new General Degree Colleges to strengthen infrastructure and expand opportunities for students. Shri Pradhan appreciated the initiatives and assured due importance to the matters raised.
Highlighting the broader vision, the Union Minister spoke about mapping skill gaps, introducing new courses in Central institutes relevant to Tripura’s economic growth, and achieving a 50% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) by 2035. He instructed the constitution of a high-level committee to prepare a roadmap and vision document for higher education in Tripura, aligned with the national goal of Viksit Bharat 2047. Special emphasis was placed on inclusive education policies to motivate tribal students to pursue higher studies and research.
The meeting was held in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, reflecting the shared commitment of both Central and State Governments to advancing higher education, skill development, and socio-economic progress in Tripura.
