18 Families Already Given Jobs, 11 names proposed Under Political Violence Relief Scheme: Minister

Date:

Agartala,  12th June 2026:   Power and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath today reaffirmed that the state government remains firmly committed to extending support to the families of those who lost their lives in incidents of political violence, including suitable government employment for eligible dependents.

Addressing a press briefing at the Secretariat, the Minister said that assistance would be provided without political bias, and that the timing of incidents or the party in power at that period would not be a determining factor. The focus, he emphasized, is on identifying genuine cases and ensuring that deserving families receive rightful support.

He referred to past incidents of violence in Tripura, stating that thousands of murders were recorded between 1993 and 2017, among which several were linked to political conflict. He noted that the present government had introduced a dedicated scheme on 23 December 2020 titled the “Scheme for providing employment to members of family of persons killed in political violence,” aimed at offering one government job per eligible family.

Initially, the scheme covered cases up to 9 March 2018, but later, under the leadership of Chief Minister Manik Saha, the Cabinet approved an amendment removing the cut-off date, thereby widening its scope.

Explaining the verification process, Nath said that each application undergoes detailed scrutiny, including police verification and multiple layers of inquiry to establish whether the death qualifies as political violence and whether a suitable family member is eligible for employment. A committee chaired by him, along with senior officials from the Law Department, Information & Cultural Affairs Department, Police, and Home Department, oversees the final recommendations.

He informed that the government has so far received 38 applications under the scheme. Of these, 18 beneficiaries have already been provided employment, 11 cases have been recommended for appointment, 5 were rejected due to lack of evidence supporting political linkage, and 4 cases are still under examination.

The Minister further remarked that even in cases from the Left Front era, where documentation is sometimes incomplete or police records are missing, the government is attempting to evaluate each case fairly. He stressed that the administration does not view such incidents through a political lens but approaches them with a humanitarian perspective, regardless of party affiliation.
