Agartala, 17th June 2026: A serious road accident left a driver critically injured on Wednesday morning, creating widespread concern in the Lakshmipur area of Kailashahar subdivision in Tripura’s Unakoti district.
According to reports, Kutan Malakar was cleaning his auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) by the roadside when a speeding vehicle coming from the Tilabazar direction lost control and crashed into both him and his vehicle. The impact was so severe that the auto-rickshaw was thrown into a roadside drain, leaving Malakar seriously injured.
Local residents rushed to the scene immediately after the accident and rescued the injured driver. He was taken to Unakoti District Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Following the collision, the driver of the offending vehicle allegedly attempted to flee the scene. However, angry locals intercepted and detained him before he could escape. Upon receiving information about the incident, police from Kailashahar Police Station arrived at the spot, brought the situation under control, and took the driver into custody.
Police sources said that the driver of the vehicle also sustained injuries in the accident and was admitted to a hospital for treatment.
The Kailashahar Police Station has registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings suggest that overspeeding and negligent driving may have been the primary causes of the accident.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents, who have urged the administration to take effective measures to curb reckless driving and improve road safety in the area.
