Agartala, 17th June 2026 : Authorities at Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala intercepted two passengers from Maharashtra and seized Rs 1.68 crore in cash during a security operation carried out by the Special Branch of Tripura Police.
The detained individuals were identified as Dattatray Thakram Virkar (36) and Sajal Sachin Devkar (21), both hailing from Maharashtra.
According to police sources, officials recovered Rs 1,68,27,000 in cash from their luggage during a routine inspection. Following the seizure, both individuals and the recovered amount were handed over to the Income Tax and Customs departments for detailed investigation.
Preliminary findings suggest that the duo had undertaken several trips between Maharashtra and Agartala since early June. Investigators suspect that they were engaged in transporting large sums of cash, allegedly delivering baggage to contacts within Agartala before returning to Maharashtra on the same day.
Authorities also discovered that the carriers reportedly did not have access to the luggage passwords. Investigators believe the passwords were exchanged directly between the sender and recipient, indicating a coordinated operation.
Further raising suspicion, the two men were allegedly provided with new mobile phones for every journey, a practice often associated with attempts to avoid detection and tracking.
Officials are now examining the source of the cash, its intended destination, and whether a larger network is involved in the operation. The investigation remains ongoing.
