Agartala, 20th June 2026: At the final stage of life, when the body has bowed down under the weight of old age, loved ones are expected to stand by one’s side. However, elderly Santana Bala Das, a resident of the Gamaibari area under Ward No. 15 of the Teliamura Municipal Council, is spending her days in complete isolation.
Due to unknown reasons, her allowance has been stopped, and she has desperately appealed for its resumption. Providing context on her situation, local resident Prasenjit Saha from Ward No. 15 explained that the elderly woman is believed to be over 100 years old and has lived alone. He said that she is rumored to have a son living elsewhere, he does not maintain contact or take care of her, and she rarely interacts with others.
Saha noted that when local youth and helpers visited her, they discovered she possessed an APL ration card despite her extreme poverty. Upon bringing this to the notice of the local MLA, discussions were held with the SDM, leading to her card being upgraded to a Priority Household (PHH) status, which currently ensures she receives free rice from the ration system.
He mentioned that while several other residents have recently started receiving their dues again, local volunteers continue to check on her well-being and the community remains committed to ensuring that Santana Bala Das regular financial support is restored.
