Tripura CM Dr. Manik Saha reaffirms zero-tolerance policy against narcotics

Date:

Agartala, 4th July 2026:   Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has reiterated his government’s firm stance against drug trafficking, highlighting recent large-scale seizures and ongoing operations across the state. Speaking to journalists, Dr. Saha emphasized that the administration is committed to a “zero-tolerance” approach, as directed by the Union Home Minister.

Responding to concerns about narcotics entering the state via trains, Dr. Saha noted that consignments are being intercepted in significant quantities. “It is a matter of satisfaction that the police are active. People often ask why the kingpins aren’t being caught—well, arrests are being made across various locations, including individuals brought in from outside,” he said. He stressed that law enforcement must act within the framework of the law, ensuring evidence-based arrests.

On the issue of masterminds behind the drug trade, the Chief Minister pointed out that several key figures have already been apprehended. “Look at the number of people currently being arrested in NDPS cases. Many are in jail, including those brought from Delhi and Hindi-speaking regions. We have given the police a free hand and do not interfere,” he asserted.

Dr. Saha confirmed that advanced scanner machines will soon be installed to detect narcotics more effectively. He explained that while physical gates at interstate borders are discouraged to promote ease of business, Tripura’s unique position as a transit corridor to Bangladesh necessitates stronger measures. “Most narcotics originate in Myanmar and enter via Assam and neighboring states. The scanners will help us detect them more efficiently, despite the high cost,” he said.

Highlighting socio-economic progress, Dr. Saha praised the increase in MGNREGA wages and workdays. “Wages have been raised to ₹300, and guaranteed work days increased from 100 to 125. Timelines and penalty provisions ensure accountability. These measures, implemented under the Honorable Prime Minister, are truly for the benefit of the people,” he remarked.
