Agartala, 4th July 2026: After repeated complaints of lax monitoring at Santirbazar naka point, the South District Transport Department finally took stern action. On Saturday morning, when traffic was relatively light, Motor Vehicles Inspector (MVI) Jahar Riang made a surprise appearance at the checkpoint. With administrative clearance, he launched a rigorous inspection drive lasting nearly 90 minutes, aimed at curbing road accidents and enforcing traffic laws.
During the operation, every vehicle passing through the busy naka point was thoroughly checked for valid documents, driver’s licenses, helmets, and seatbelt compliance. Several drivers were caught without proper papers, and multiple vehicles were penalized on the spot. In some cases, licenses were confiscated immediately.
Local residents welcomed the crackdown, praising the administration’s tough stance. They believe regular monitoring will raise awareness among drivers and reduce accidents. However, some locals pointed out that irregular checks in the past allowed unscrupulous drivers and goods carriers to flout rules with impunity.
Meanwhile, sources allege that Santirbazar police station’s Second Officer-in-Charge, Samir Biswas, has been collecting “donations” from certain vehicles and cattle-laden trucks. The claim has sparked concern among citizens, who are urging authorities to ensure transparency and continue such surprise inspections regularly.
