Agartala, 5th July 2026: Train services remained completely disrupted for several hours on Sunday after local residents staged a rail blockade at Wakshimal area under Teliamura subdivision, demanding the construction of a bridge. The protest left several trains stranded midway, causing severe inconvenience to hundreds of passengers.
Among the affected trains was the long-distance Kanchanjunga Express, which remained halted in the hilly section due to the blockade. Meanwhile, a passenger train travelling from Silchar to Agartala was forced to stop at Teliamura Railway Station, leaving commuters stranded and frustrated.
Congress leaders and workers from North Tripura and Unakoti districts were also among those affected. They were travelling to Agartala to participate in a pre-announced mass sit-in organised by the All India Panchayat Parishad, Tripura State Committee. The demonstration was scheduled to raise several demands, including the withdrawal of the decision banning private practice by doctors of GB Hospital and AGMC.
Unable to reach Agartala on time because of the disruption, the Congress workers staged a protest at Teliamura Railway Station. They alleged that the rail blockade had not only caused immense hardship to ordinary passengers but also disrupted scheduled political programmes.
Congress leaders said the blockade had led to significant public suffering and urged the administration to resolve the issue at the earliest. They also called for effective measures to restore normal train services and safeguard the interests of passengers.
Meanwhile, the district administration and railway authorities initiated necessary steps to normalize the situation and restore rail operations.
