Agartala, 6th August 2026: The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Tribal Students’ Union (TSU) have demanded immediate strengthening of security at the women’s hostel of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), following an incident involving a female student on July 30.
A joint delegation of the two student organisations met the AGMC Principal on Thursday and submitted a deputation outlining several demands concerning the safety and security of students.
Speaking after the meeting, the student leaders expressed deep concern over the incident and said it had heightened fears among students, teachers and the general public. They also drew comparisons with previous incidents of violence against women at R.G. Kar Medical College and in Delhi.
A major demand raised by the organisations was the immediate enhancement of security around the women’s hostel. They pointed out that the hostel does not have a proper boundary wall, arguing that adequate perimeter security is essential for ensuring the safety of female students.
The student bodies also questioned the delay in arresting the accused. They said it was “shocking and unfortunate” that the alleged perpetrator had not yet been arrested despite the passage of time. They further pointed out that a GB police outpost is located only around 100 metres from the hostel.
The delegation also raised concerns about accommodation for around 260–300 students expected to move into the hostel this year. According to the student organisations, the Principal informed them that construction work on the building was yet to be completed and could not provide a clear assurance regarding accommodation arrangements.
SFI and TSU demanded decisive action from the college administration, police and state government to ensure the safety of students and prevent similar incidents.
The organisations warned that if authorities fail to address the concerns and any negligence persists, they would move beyond submitting deputations and mobilise students for street protests.
