Agartala, 9th August 2026: Police in Tripura’s Madhupur have detained two Bangladeshi women for allegedly entering India illegally by crossing the border fence in the Kaiyadhepa border area on Sunday.
According to police sources, the detained women have been identified as Shakila Khanum, 31, wife of Arshad Sheikh and a resident of Saruria under Mollahat police station in Bagerhat district of Bangladesh, and Sonia Sultana, a resident of Phuldhar village under Kalia police station in Narail district. Sonia’s husband has been identified as Aslam Molla.
During preliminary questioning, police reportedly learned that the two women had travelled from Dhaka to the border area with the help of an alleged human trafficking or agent network. After crossing the border fence illegally through the Kaiyadhepa area, they were allegedly planning to travel to Chennai, where they intended to work in hotels to earn money.
Police said their movements in the border area appeared suspicious, following which they were questioned. After noticing inconsistencies in their statements, the women were detained and brought to Madhupur Police Station for further interrogation. Police said the questioning subsequently revealed that they had entered India without valid travel documents.
Both women reportedly have families and children in Bangladesh. During questioning, they allegedly told police that they had decided to come to India through agents in search of better-paying jobs so that they could send money back to their families. They also reportedly said that although employment opportunities were available in Bangladesh, the wages were not sufficient.
Police have registered a case against the two women for allegedly violating passport and visa-related laws. They were produced before the Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Court at around 3 pm on Sunday.
Police are now investigating whether an agent network was involved in facilitating their illegal entry and whether others were involved in the cross-border movement.
