Tipra Motha MLA Urges AMC Mayor to Rehabilitate Evicted Vegetable Vendors

Date:

Agartala, 12th August 2026: Tipra Motha MLA Biswajit Kalai has appealed to Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder for urgent intervention following the eviction of vegetable vendors from Nandan Nagar, near Don Bosco School.

In a letter to the Mayor, Kalai said the eviction had severely affected the livelihoods of several poor families who depended on street vending for their daily income. He urged the municipal authorities to balance enforcement of civic regulations with the livelihood and dignity of economically vulnerable citizens.

The MLA also expressed concern over reports that individuals not officially authorised to participate in the enforcement drive were allegedly present during the operation. He cautioned that the involvement of outsiders in an official municipal action could create fear among the vendors and fuel unnecessary tension in the locality.

Kalai sought a prompt and impartial inquiry into the incident, including verification of whether unauthorised persons took part in the eviction. He also requested the AMC to identify genuine vendors affected by the drive and assess their immediate rehabilitation needs.

Calling for a humanitarian solution, the MLA urged the civic body to provide alternative vending locations or introduce a suitable rehabilitation package for the displaced vendors. He further appealed to the authorities to avoid harsh or coercive measures against genuine vendors until a proper alternative arrangement is made.

Kalai proposed a joint consultation involving AMC officials, elected representatives, vendor representatives and relevant administrative authorities to resolve the issue through dialogue.

He stressed that maintaining peace and communal harmony should be given equal importance alongside municipal regulation. A transparent, lawful and compassionate approach, he said, would help restore confidence among the affected families and prevent further misunderstanding.

Kalai appealed to Mayor Majumder to take immediate personal initiative to resolve the grievances, rehabilitate the displaced vendors and ensure a peaceful atmosphere in Nandan Nagar.
