Agartala, 31st August 2026 : Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Monday said traffic regulations are applicable equally to everyone, including police personnel, while informing the Assembly that the government is expanding technology-based traffic management to improve road safety and discipline across the state.
Replying to a question raised by BJP MLA Pramod Reang in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Saha said the government is using speed radar guns, interceptor vehicles, Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and red-light violation detection cameras to identify traffic offences.
He said e-challan machines and QR code-based systems are being introduced for the online collection of fines. Traffic checkpoints are also being equipped with breath analysers, speed radar guns, body-worn cameras, video cameras, wireless sets and other enforcement equipment.
The Chief Minister said speed-checking devices with display boards have been installed at several locations in Agartala, including near the Tripura High Court, between Ashram Chowmuhani and Chandrapur ISBT, and between ONGC Bank Chowmuhani and the main ONGC entrance.
He added that awareness programmes on the Motor Vehicles Act and related rules are being conducted through social media, display screens, banners and posters.
Responding to a supplementary question from Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma, who raised concerns over police personnel allegedly violating traffic rules and checkpoints causing congestion, Saha said the law is the same for everyone.
“The law is the same for everyone,” the Chief Minister said, stressing that police personnel should also comply with traffic regulations. He added that if officials violate rules or conduct enforcement without proper authorisation, action should be taken according to law.
Saha further said smart traffic management is not intended merely to increase challan collection. He highlighted the role of the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) in monitoring traffic violations.
According to the Chief Minister, the system currently includes around 515 CCTV cameras, 22 smart traffic signals, 81 red-light violation detection cameras, 43 ANPR cameras, 77 variable message display boards and 237 GPS-based traffic units.
He said the government plans to strengthen such technology-driven traffic management in other towns of Tripura as well, with the broader objective of reducing accidents, improving traffic discipline and ensuring public safety.]
