Amit Shah gives fresh assurance on Tripartite Accord implementation; Land rights issue may see progress this month

Date:

Agartala, 4th September 2026 :   The implementation of the Tripartite Agreement and the long-pending issue of land rights for indigenous people of Tripura took centre stage at a crucial meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Friday.

The nearly 90-minute meeting, held at the residence of the Union Home Minister, was attended by Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr Manik Saha, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, NE Coordinator Sambit Patra and senior officials of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

According to sources, Amit Shah assured the participants that the Tripartite Accord would be implemented through a two-phase process. A major assurance was also given regarding land rights, with the Union Home Minister reportedly indicating that necessary steps for providing land-related documents or land writs under the provisions of the Sixth Schedule could be completed within the current month.

The meeting reportedly witnessed detailed discussions on safeguarding the constitutional, social and cultural identity of the indigenous tribal communities of Tripura. The implementation mechanism of various commitments made under the Tripartite Agreement also came up for discussion.

Sources said the Centre is expected to play a key role in facilitating the documentation and recognition of land rights as part of the broader implementation process.

The high-level interaction has also generated fresh political interest, particularly with the Village Committee elections approaching in Tripura. Political observers are viewing the meeting as an important development amid speculation about closer coordination between the BJP and Tipra Motha.

Meanwhile, sources informed that Chief Minister Prof. Dr Manik Saha is likely to make an official statement on the discussions and the assurances received during the New Delhi meeting after his return to Tripura on Saturday.
