Agartala, 6th September 2026 : Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Sunday expressed concern over allegations that some candidates may have obtained B.Ed degrees from fake or substandard colleges in neighbouring West Bengal and subsequently used the certificates for government recruitment in the state.
Reacting to questions about the issue, Dr. Saha said the government would not allow anyone to appear in examinations or secure employment on the basis of questionable or fake educational certificates.
“People cannot obtain certificates from somewhere and simply appear in examinations here. The government will not allow this in any way. If anyone has done so, legal action will be taken,” the Chief Minister said.
He stressed that there would be no compromise on the quality of education or healthcare in the state. The Chief Minister also indicated that legal action would be taken against those who are already employed if their educational qualifications are found to be invalid.
The statement comes amid reports from West Bengal that the state’s Higher Education Department has issued show-cause notices to around 450 of its 602 B.Ed colleges over allegations of irregularities, including fake degrees and violations of norms. Reports also suggest that inspections found several institutions to be non-existent or operating from residential premises without complying with National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) norms.
The developments have raised concerns in Tripura as a number of students from the state are reported to have obtained B.Ed degrees from institutions in West Bengal in recent years.
The Chief Minister’s warning assumes significance as questions are now being raised over the validity of certificates submitted by candidates seeking teaching jobs as well as those already employed in the state.
“If fake or invalid degrees are used to secure government jobs, it will adversely affect the quality of education,” Dr. Saha said, making it clear that the government would take the necessary legal steps if any irregularities are established.
Sources said the Chief Minister may hold a meeting with senior officials of the concerned departments to discuss the matter and examine the validity of certificates obtained from institutions under scrutiny in West Bengal.
