Agartala, 7th September 2026 : Ahead of the upcoming Village Committee elections, the District Magistrate of Sepahijala district, Dr. Siddhartha Shiv Jaiswal, has ordered all licensed firearm and ammunition holders to deposit their weapons and ammunition with the concerned police stations to ensure the elections are conducted freely, fairly and peacefully.
According to the order issued by the District Magistrate, all persons holding valid licences for firearms and ammunition must deposit them at their respective police stations by September 10, 2026. The order will remain in force until the entire election process is completed.
The District Magistrate issued the directive by exercising powers vested under the Arms Act, 1959, as part of preventive security measures for the upcoming elections.
However, the order exempts police personnel on duty, paramilitary forces, armed forces personnel, armed forest guards and security personnel deployed at banks.
The administration has warned that legal action will be taken against anyone found possessing firearms or ammunition beyond the stipulated deadline in violation of the order.
The move is aimed at maintaining law and order and ensuring a peaceful environment throughout the Village Committee election process in Sepahijala district.
