Youth, Family Allegedly Attacked Over Opposition to Drug Trade in Agartala

Date:

Agartala, 7th September 2026 : Tension has gripped the Goalabasti area near the High Court in Agartala following allegations that a youth and his family members were assaulted in connection with their opposition to the alleged drug trade in the locality.

The injured youth, Sanjit Roy, alleged that he and his family had received death threats around six months ago after protesting against drug-related activities in the area. He claimed that the earlier dispute was behind the alleged assault on him on September 4.

According to local sources, on September 4, a man identified as Anil Roy went to a cattle-feed shop in the Goalabasti area to purchase items including bran and husk. An argument reportedly broke out between him and the shop owner over outstanding payments and previous dues. As the situation escalated, Sanjit Roy was reportedly called to the spot.

The victim’s family alleged that 6–8 youths, allegedly led by Anil Roy, subsequently gathered at the location carrying weapons including machetes, sticks and iron rods. They allegedly launched a sudden attack on Sanjit Roy and his family members.

Sanjit reportedly sustained serious injuries and lost consciousness at the spot. Local residents later rescued him and shifted him to Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital. His younger brother, Tuntun Roy, was also seriously injured in the alleged attack and was subsequently admitted to a private hospital for advanced treatment. The family claimed that his condition remains critical.

Sanjit Roy further alleged that drug trafficking has been continuing in the Goalabasti area for a long time. He named Anil Roy, Pintu Roy, Akash Roy and Biki Roy, among others, as people allegedly involved in the trade. However, these allegations could not be independently verified.

A complaint was lodged at NCC Police Station on September 5. The family claimed that seven people were named in the complaint, but only one person has so far been detained, while the others remain at large.

The victim’s family has also raised questions over the police response, alleging that effective action has not been taken against some of the accused despite alleged links to drug-related activities.

Sanjit Roy has demanded a thorough investigation, legal action against all those involved in the alleged assault and adequate security for his family.

Whether opposition to the alleged drug trade was indeed the motive behind the attack, and who was actually involved, will become clear after the police investigation.
