Agartala, 8th September 2026 : Tensions have surfaced within the ruling alliance in Tripura after IPFT General Secretary Swapan Debbarma was allegedly assaulted at Hezamara on Tuesday while travelling towards Khowai district.
According to reports, supporters of the Tipra Motha Party were allegedly involved in the incident. The development comes at a time when preparations are underway for the upcoming Village Council General Election.
The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) and Tipra Motha are both part of the BJP-led alliance in the state government and are contesting the Village Council elections as alliance partners.
Tripura Cooperative Minister and senior IPFT leader Shukla Charan Noatia strongly condemned the alleged attack on Debbarma. In a statement, Noatia said he was “deeply shocked” by the incident and described the alleged assault as unacceptable political violence.
He stressed that such incidents could undermine the unity among alliance partners, particularly during the ongoing election process.
“Such acts of aggression directly undermine the very spirit of our unity,” Noatia said, while calling for an immediate end to political violence in the state. The minister appealed to workers and supporters of the BJP, IPFT and Tipra Motha to exercise restraint and maintain peace during the election period.
Noatia also urged all political parties and their supporters to ensure a peaceful and democratic atmosphere throughout the electoral process, emphasising that political differences should not escalate into violence.
