Rs 40 lakh cash seized during naka checking in Kamalpur; five detained

Agartala, 20th September 2026 :  Police seized Rs 40 lakh in cash from a suspected Bolero vehicle during a naka checking operation at Durga Chowmuhani under Kamalpur subdivision on Saturday night and detained five persons travelling in the vehicle.

According to police sources, the naka checking was being conducted at around 8 pm under the joint leadership of Kamalpur Traffic In-charge Pankaj Debnath and Officer-in-Charge of Kamalpur Police Station suman Acharya.

During the checking, police stopped a private Bolero bearing registration number TR 01 CD 0692 which was travelling from Dharmanagar towards Agartala. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of Rs 40 lakh in cash

The five detained persons have been identified as Muktar Hossain, son of Chand Mia, of Teliamura; Jasim Mia, son of Habil Mia, of Melaghar; Kabir Mia son of Jalil Mia, of Sachindralal area in Agartala; Liton Mia, son of Nur Mohammad Mia, of Khowai; and Rabindra Das, son of Gour Das, of Teliamura. Their ages are reportedly between 18 and 33 years.

During preliminary questioning, the detained persons reportedly claimed that the money was related to betel nut business transactions. However, police allegedly found inconsistencies in their statements regarding the source and purpose of the cash.

The cash was counted using a machine in the presence of Kamalpur subdivision DCM Aditi Das, SDPO Saurav Das, police officer Kapil Pal and other police officials and sub-inspectors.

Police have launched an investigation to determine the source of the cash, the persons or businesses involved in the transaction and whether any larger network is connected to the matter.

Police sources said the Rs 40 lakh and the five detained persons are scheduled to be produced before a court on Sunday. Further details are expected to emerge after the investigation progresses.
