Agartala, 5th October 2026 : TIPRA Motha Party emerged as the dominant political force in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Committee elections on Monday, winning 2,803 of the 3,470 seats whose results had been declared by 6 pm, even as counting was marred by protests, road blockades and clashes at several centres.
The results marked a strong showing by TIPRA Motha in the grassroots-level elections, with the BJP emerging a distant second with 508 seats. Independents secured 93 seats, while the CPI(M) won 40, IPFT 16 and Congress 10 seats.
The outcome is politically significant for the tribal-dominated areas, where control over Village Committees is closely linked to grassroots political influence and organisational strength. The results also indicated a sharp contest between TIPRA Motha and the BJP, while the CPI(M) and Congress remained far behind in the tally declared so far.
Polling for 587 Village Committees was held on September 28, recording around 81 per cent turnout. Elections were conducted for 2,950 seats, while the remaining seats were settled uncontested.
However, the counting process was accompanied by political tensions at several centres. State Election Commission Secretary Anugra Sen said counting began at 8 am and that isolated incidents caused delays at some locations. According to him, police and civil administration intervened to restore normalcy, while the Commission had not received any formal complaint from political parties.
In Sepahijala district, tension was reported at Poly Bari Class XII English Medium School in Kathalia block, where counting was underway. Supporters of TIPRA Motha allegedly blocked roads leading to the centre, prompting opposition leaders to protest outside Jatrapur police station.
In Dhalai’s Salema block, CPI(M) supporters allegedly blocked the road at Maharani, claiming that their counting agents were prevented from entering Maharani High School. The party also alleged that some of its agents were removed from the premises and their identity cards taken away.
Political tension also escalated in Khowai, where police and Central Armed Police Forces personnel reportedly used a lathi-charge outside Bharat Sardar Vidyalaya, the counting centre for Tulashikhar Rural Development Block, after a crowd allegedly attempted to breach security barricades.
Local reports said 10 to 12 people, including women, were injured and taken to Khowai District Hospital.
With results still being declared, the strong performance of TIPRA Motha has given the party considerable political momentum in the tribal areas, while the BJP’s second-place position leaves the emerging balance of power in the TTAADC’s grassroots institutions as the key political takeaway from the counting.
