Tripura Crosses 20 MW Solar Power Milestone, Marking New Era in Renewable Energy

Date:

Agartala, 4th November 2026 :  Tripura has achieved a significant milestone in renewable energy, with the cumulative installed capacity of rooftop solar power systems under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana crossing 20 MW. The achievement marks a major step towards transforming the state’s electricity generation landscape by enabling households to become active producers of clean energy.

According to data available up to November 3, 2026, a total of 18,186 registrations have been recorded under the scheme in Tripura, while 8,421 applications have been submitted. The proposed solar power generation capacity from these applications stands at 26,961 kilowatt-peak (kWp).

So far, rooftop solar installations have been completed in 5,819 households across the state, taking the cumulative installed capacity to 20,002 kWp, or approximately 20 MW.

The scheme has also delivered substantial financial benefits to consumers. As many as 5,092 beneficiaries have received government subsidies amounting to Rs 43.01 crore. The financial assistance is helping households reduce their electricity expenses while encouraging the adoption of environmentally sustainable energy solutions.

The momentum continues, with 11 new registrations and 11 applications submitted on November 3 alone, representing a proposed generation capacity of 43 kWp.

The achievement is particularly significant as electricity generation, traditionally dependent on large power plants and conventional energy sources, is gradually becoming decentralised. Rooftop solar installations are turning ordinary houses into small power-generating units. Households can use the electricity generated during the day and supply surplus power to the grid, reducing dependence on conventional sources.

Under the leadership of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) Managing Director Biswajit Basu, special emphasis is being placed on the implementation and expansion of the scheme. The state government and the power utility are working towards bringing more households under the rooftop solar initiative.

The programme is expected to gain further momentum with the upcoming ULA scheme, which aims to cover 1.5 lakh economically disadvantaged families. Work under the initiative is expected to begin shortly.

Crossing the 20 MW mark is not merely a statistical achievement but the beginning of a larger transition towards clean and sustainable energy. With increasing public participation and wider adoption of rooftop solar systems, Tripura is moving towards a future where households will play a vital role in strengthening the state’s energy security and self-reliance.
