50-year demand for Kokborok language in Roman script: TSF called for 12-hour bandh

Agartala, August 26, 2023: A five-decade-long demand for the adoption of the Roman script for writing the Kokborok language has led to a 12-hour bandh (strike) scheduled for August 28 in several areas, including Hatai Katar, Champaknagar, Hezamara, Bishramganj, and Manughat. The demand certificate was formally submitted to the government two months ago, but no official response has been received to date.

Haumanu Jamatia, General Secretary of the Twipra Students Federation (TSF), made the announcement during a press conference held at the Agartala Press Club on Saturday. He emphasized that the strike would exclude emergency service vehicles and essential shops, ensuring minimal disruption to daily life.

The call for this bandh serves as a significant step in the ongoing campaign to have Kakbarak, a language spoken by a significant population in the region, recognized in the Roman script. TSF is urging all student organizations to unite and support this cause on August 28, further highlighting the importance of preserving linguistic diversity and heritage.
