Agartala, 3rd October 2023 : In a groundbreaking decision, Dharmanagar Special Court Judge Anshuman Debbarma has delivered a verdict that will resonate through legal annals.

Saurabh Chandranath and Dibakar Das, convicted of the heinous rape and murder of a minor in Padmapur on June 19, 2019, have been sentenced to death.

The harrowing incident shook the community, leaving the family of the victim devastated. The minor girl had gone missing, prompting frantic search efforts. When her lifeless body was discovered in the Kargil Tila area of Haflong tea garden, it marked the beginning of a relentless pursuit of justice.

The Dharmanagar Women Police Station spearheaded the investigation, arresting Chandranath and Das after they confessed to the crime during interrogation. Subsequent forensic analysis of the victim’s clothing confirmed the gruesome details, affirming that she had been sexually assaulted prior to her tragic demise.

The trial, which included testimonies from 41 witnesses, led to the accused being convicted under Section 6 of the POCSO Act, IPC Section 376D, and IPC Section 302. On Tuesday, Judge Debbarma handed down a sentence that will serve as a precedent. Chandranath and Das have been sentenced to life imprisonment under various sections, along with hefty fines.
