Agartala, November 13: A lawyer Gopal Singh was arrested by the West Agartala police on Sunday for his alleged involvement in the murder of a court clerk Amit Acharya, who died after being assaulted by a group of lawyers and clerks in the court premises on September 05.

The police produced Singh before the court on Monday and sought a three-day police remand for further interrogation. However, the court rejected the police plea and sent Singh to judicial custody till November 24.

According to the police, Singh and four others had a heated argument with Acharya, a licensed clerk in the district court, over some previous dispute. They allegedly attacked Acharya with sticks and fists, leaving him severely injured.

Acharya was admitted to IGM Hospital and later shifted to GB Hospital. He was discharged from GB Hospital on September 12 and taken to a private hospital in Kolkata for better treatment. He succumbed to his injuries on September 23.

Amit Acharya’s father, Dilip Acharya, filed a complaint against the five accused at the West Agartala police station on September 23. The police registered a case of murder and launched a manhunt for the culprits. Four of them are still absconding.

Singh’s lawyer, Shankar Lodh, claimed that his client was innocent and that there was no evidence to link him to Acharya’s death. He said that Acharya had died due to some other medical complications and not due to the assault. He also applied for bail for Singh, which was also denied by the court.

The murder of Amit Acharya has sparked outrage among the legal fraternity and the public, who have demanded justice for the victim and strict action against the perpetrators.
