Seminar program by IEI on World Soil Day

Agartala, 6th December 2023 : The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI), Tripura State Centre, in association with National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development (NABARD), Tripura Regional Office and College of Agriculture, Tripura organized a seminar program on the theme ‘Soil and Water: A Source of Life’ on December 5, 2023, in connection with World Soil Day 2023. This program was held in the Seminar Hall of IEI, Tripura State Centre, Gurkhabasti, Agartala.

World Soil Day is held annually on 5 December as a means to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources. The relation between soil and water is deep and the foundation of our agrifood systems, our environment, and our very existence.

World Soil Day 2023 on the theme ‘Soil and Water: A Source of Life’ is an opportunity to raise awareness on the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems, underscoring the need to take proactive safeguarding measures to mitigate and minimize problems such as soil erosion and compaction, which disrupt the capacity of soil to store, drain and filter water as well as exacerbate the risk of floods, landslides and sand or dust storms. Such measures include promoting the sustainable use of agricultural inputs, employing appropriate irrigation methods, improving drainage systems and monitoring salinity levels.

Dr. Tapan Kumar Maity, Principal, College of Agriculture, Tripura, Loken Das, General Manager of NABARD, Agartala Regional Office, and Er. Sagar Sobhan Debnath, Chief Engineer, Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Govt. of Tripura, graced the occasion as Guests of Honour. The special speakers of the program were Dr. Banasri Roy Choudhary, Joint Director (Research), Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Govt. of Tripura and Dr. Saurav Das, Asst. Professor, College of Agriculture, Tripura. The program was presided over by Dr. Subhadeep Bhattacharjee, Chairman of the Institution of Engineers (India), Tripura State Centre. Dr. Mrinal Kanti Deb Barma, Honorary Secretary of the Center, delivered the welcome address on this occasion.

The discussion underscored the importance of development of wasteland areas, rainwater harvesting facilities, soil microbial processes, carbon sequential model, water management in Tripura, organic farming, impact of climate change on soil health. Quarterly News Letter of the Tripura State Centre was also released on this occasion.
