Agartala, January 23:  A group of Janjati women staged a protest against the opening of a foreign liquor shop in North Taibandal area of Tripura on Tuesday. The women said that the liquor shop was against the slogan of drug-free Tripura and would harm the social and moral fabric of the area.

The women appealed to the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of the country to intervene and stop the liquor shop from operating. They said that the liquor shop was located near the North Taibandal Primary Healthcare Centre and would cause nuisance and harassment to the patients and the residents. They also said that the men of the area were already addicted to alcohol and were creating trouble for the women and children.

The women alleged that the liquor shop was owned by Birendra Mohan Jamatia, an influential person from Udaipur of Gomati district. They said that he had obtained the liquor license by bribing a local leader and had no regard for the sentiments of the people. They demanded that the District Magistrate of Sepahijala should cancel the license and shut down the liquor shop. They also warned of further agitation if their demands were not met.
