Unpaid MNREGA workers in Khowai face dire financial crisis

Date:

BY TC News Desk

Agartala, 8th February 2024:   The MNREGA workers in Khowai district, particularly in six blocks, are grappling with a severe financial crisis as their salaries for the month of January remain unpaid, casting a shadow over the livelihoods of low-paid workers.

More than two hundred employees, including Gram Rozgar Sevaks (GRS), Engineers, Program Officers, Accountants, and Computer Operators, are affected by the delay in payment. Despite the passage of February 8th, not a single MNREGA employee in the district has received their wages, plunging families into dire poverty.

The MNREGA scheme workers, integral to various development projects, are experiencing financial hardship, exacerbated by the apparent lack of urgency from the District Magistrate and Block Development Officer (BDO). The silence from the authorities has left the affected families feeling abandoned in the face of their growing economic woes.

Sources reveal that the coffers of the MNREGA project are reportedly empty, leading to the delay in salary disbursement. An official from the district administrator’s office disclosed that such delays are a recurring issue, with last month’s salary reaching the workers’ bank accounts only by the twelfth day.

The District Magistrate and BDO seem unresponsive to the plight of MNREGA workers, leaving them without any clear timeline for when their overdue salaries will be credited. This problem is not confined to Khowai district alone; it extends across the state, affecting REGA workers in all blocks.
