Agartala, 2nd March 2024:  The Congress party has accused the ruling government of mismanaging the finances of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) and burdening the consumers with unjustified tariff hikes. The party claimed that the TSECL had a surplus of Tk 332 crore 71 lakh before March 3, 2018, but now it is in a debt of Rs 518 crore 49 lakh.

A delegation of the Congress party met the TSECL managing director Debashish Sarkar on Saturday and submitted a memorandum demanding the immediate withdrawal of the tariff hike policy. The party alleged that the government had failed to explain how the TSECL had incurred such a huge loss despite having a healthy balance sheet earlier.

Prabir Chakraborty, the spokesperson of the Pradesh Congress, said that the central and state leaderships of the ruling party were involved in corruption and nepotism, and had no concern for the common people. He said that the electricity tariff had been increasing continuously since 2019, and the latest hike was the highest in the country. He said that the Congress party would launch a mass agitation against the government if it did not revoke the tariff hike.
