Agartala, March 27: Residents of Srinathpur village in Kailashahar staged a protest on Wednesday by blocking the Baburbazar-Hiracherra road. The villagers, mainly from Ward No.2 of Srinathpur Gram Panchayat, voiced their grievances against the panchayat authorities, particularly targeting Secretary Nanu Mia and other members.
With approximately 150 families residing in Ward No.2, the villagers highlighted their dire situation, citing a lack of proper roads and drinking water facilities. They emphasized that their only dirt road had become impassable, causing significant inconvenience.
According to the protesters, despite deliveries of essential materials such as bricks for road repairs and pipes for drinking water connections, these resources seemed to vanish mysteriously. They accused the panchayat authorities of neglect and mismanagement, asserting that allocated funds for well construction had been misused, leaving the community without adequate water access.
The villagers claimed that despite repeated pleas and assurances from the panchayat, no concrete actions had been taken to address their concerns. Feeling ignored and frustrated, they resorted to blocking the road as a means of drawing attention to their plight.
Upon receiving notice of the blockade, law enforcement from the Irani police station swiftly intervened. The villagers reiterated their demands for immediate action regarding road repairs and water supply improvements.
Following negotiations between the villagers and OC Jatindra Das of Irani police station, assurances were given that efforts would be made to resolve the issues within the next two days by engaging relevant departments. Subsequently, the protesters agreed to lift the blockade, awaiting tangible progress.
The incident underscores the pressing need for effective governance and infrastructure development in rural areas, where basic amenities are often lacking. Residents continue to emphasize the importance of sustained efforts to address their fundamental needs and improve their quality of life.
