Agartala, 1st April 2024: Residents of North Maheshpur village, Kathalia under Belonia sub-division are facing a state of lockdown as they fear the presence of a Bison from Trishna wildlife sanctuary. The bison breached the boundaries of Trishna Sanctuary and entered the village several days back, causing chaos by roaming around people’s houses. Forest department personnel are scrambling on bikes, attempting to control the situation.
Local authorities, including the Jatrapur police station, have launched awareness campaigns urging residents to stay vigilant and seek shelter. The unchecked movement of the bison has sparked fear among villagers, leading to widespread concern for safety.
The Forest department’s negligence has been criticized, as it’s believed that the bison strayed into the village due to mismanagement of the sanctuary. This isn’t the first instance of such an incident, as previous years have seen similar occurrences resulting in the loss of bisons and illegal poaching activities.
Efforts are underway to safely capture the bison and return it to the Trishna Sanctuary. However, the situation remains tense as villagers continue to chase the animal, exacerbating the risk of escalation. Authorities are striving to maintain calm and ensure the safe relocation of the bison back to its natural habitat.
