Agartala, 28th May 2024: In response to the heavy rains caused by the influence of Cyclone ‘Remal’, 15 relief camps have been set up across the state. These camps are providing shelter to 746 people who have been affected by the floods. Additionally, 467 houses have been damaged due to the impact of the cyclone.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Secretariat on Tuesday evening, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury highlighted the severity of the situation. He emphasized that the water levels of various rivers have risen significantly over the past two days due to the heavy rainfall. The Water Resources Department is closely monitoring the water levels in rivers and dams.
The impact of Cyclone Remal has resulted in extensive damage to both agriculture and electricity infrastructure in the state. District administrations and relevant departments are working tirelessly to carry out rescue operations and provide essential services to those affected. Immediate assistance is being extended to the victims.
According to the Food Minister, the average rainfall in the state over the last 24 hours was 215.5 mm. Notably, Unakoti district received the highest rainfall, measuring 252.4 mm, while South Tripura district experienced the lowest rainfall at 168 mm.
In response to the crisis, a meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary has already taken necessary steps to address the situation caused by Cyclone Remal. Directives have been issued to every district administration to implement essential measures. Various agencies, including the SDRF, NDRF, Fire Service, State Administration, and Revenue Department, are actively engaged in managing the emergency.
The cyclone has led to blocked roads due to uprooted trees, disrupting transportation, and causing power outages. Despite these challenges, administration officials are working relentlessly to restore normalcy and alleviate the impact of the disaster.
