Agartala, 25th June 2024:   Today marks the 49th anniversary of one of the darkest chapters in Indian political history, as BJP Sadar (Urban) District observes June 25 as ‘Black Day’ in solemn protest against the imposition of Emergency in 1975. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s decision to declare Emergency, aimed at stifling political opposition, continues to resonate in the collective memory of the nation.

Led by BJP Sadar (Urban) District President Ashim Bhattacharjee and accompanied by party karyakartas, a protest march was organized to commemorate the day. Activists gathered to denounce the emergency declaration, recalling how on this day in 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi invoked Article 352 of the Constitution prompting President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed to formally declare the state of emergency.

“This day signifies a painful memory in our nation’s democratic journey,” remarked one activist, highlighting the enduring impact of that controversial decision on Indian democracy. Protesters voiced their concerns about preserving democratic freedoms and reiterated the importance of vigilance against any erosion of constitutional rights.

The commemoration underscores a stark reminder of the significance of upholding democratic principles, even decades after the events of June 25, 1975.
