Agartala, 7th July 2024:   Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury today wrote a letter to the Tripura State Election Commissioner Saradindu Chowdhury demanded to immediately declare the schedule of election so that the process could be completed before the present tenure of the Panchayat bodies ends.

In the letter, Chaudhury who is also CPIM MLA said referred a news item and said that the ruling BJP requires to enroll some of their aspirant candidates in the electoral roll of the Gram Panchayat and as the procedure of enrolment/transfer of their name is not yet complete, hence, the Commission deferred declaration of Gram Panchayat Election 2024, to serve the ruling party’s illegal and unethical interest.

“For instances, the news item exhibited copy of the letter of D.M. & Collector, West Tripura who happens to be Returning Officer of Zilla Parishad Constituencies of West Tripura District. The DM & Collector, West Tripura in his letter sought suggestion of the Commission regarding enrolment of one Balai Goswami, BJP leader and an elector of 7- Ramnagar Assembly Constituency in the Taltala GP under Bamutia Block”, the letter reads.

He said that as regards preparation of Gram Panchayat electoral roll, generally it is made by GP- wise segregation from the latest updated electoral roll finalized by the ECI.

“In the draft Panchayat electoral roll only errors in addition or deletion in segregation are corrected and finalized. The SEC does not call for individual claims and objection nor arranges any individual hearing before finalizing the Electoral Roll. Thus there is no ground to entertain individual claim. Under the circumstances, I request you, instead of waiting to serve unethical interest of the ruling BJP, immediately declare the schedule of election so that the process could be completed before the present tenure of the Panchayat bodies ends”, he added.
