Agartala, 18th August 2024:  Over a hundred concerned citizens took to the streets of Agartala in a significant protest rally, demanding justice and the safety of women. The rally, which began at Ujjayanta Palace and concluded at Agartala City Centre, was a collective outcry led by young children, women, and men from various walks of life.

A protestor, spoke passionately about the broader issue of violence against women, citing alarming global statistics. “Reports indicate that a woman is raped every 60 minutes worldwide, with many more cases likely going unreported,” she stated. She outlined three primary demands: the implementation of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Act in all private sectors, the inclusion of self-defense training in school curricula, and the expedited resolution of sexual harassment cases. “This protest isn’t just about the RG Kar Medical College incident; it’s about the global crisis of violence against women. We envision a world where women no longer have to demand justice on the streets. We want a safe society for all women,” Deb emphasized.

Another elderly woman, also joined the protest, calling for strict punishment for those involved in the RG Kar Medical College tragedy. She expressed her belief in the power of such protests to curb crimes against women, asserting, “As citizens, it is our democratic right to protest, especially for older generations like ours who feel they have no other recourse.”

A young boy participating in the rally urged his peers to be proactive in preventing violence against women. “This is not an isolated incident. We must take action to prevent such atrocities,” he said. The protest highlighted the community’s unwavering commitment to fighting for women’s safety and justice.
