Agartala, 18th August 2024: Tensions escalated in the Barajala area as residents took to the streets to protest against unmarked waste-carrying vehicles operated by AMC.
The demonstration followed a serious accident involving an unmarked vehicle, which left a local resident, Abhijit Das, critically injured.
As per locals Das, who was returning from his father-in-law’s house after attending a family function, was struck by one of these vehicles early Sunday morning. The collision resulted in severe injuries, leading to the amputation of one of his legs.
Eyewitnesses report that the vehicle, a three-wheeler carrying garbage, fled the scene after the accident, with Das’s helmet still lodged in the vehicle. The driver reportedly threw the helmet out of the vehicle before speeding away. Shocked by the incident, locals rushed Das to GB Hospital for emergency treatment.
Anger quickly spread through the community as residents pointed to ongoing concerns regarding the AMC’s vehicles. Many claim these waste-carrying trucks frequently move at high speeds, posing a significant danger to pedestrians and drivers alike. The absence of number plates on these vehicles has raised questions about their legality and accountability. Residents have demanded that the speed of these vehicles be curbed and that all vehicles must display proper documentation and number plates.
In response to the protests, the police and officials from AMC arrived at the scene and official acknowledged the issue, stating that some older vehicles do not have number plates due to challenges in upgrading them from BS-4 to BS-6 emission standards. Despite lacking plates, these vehicles reportedly carry chassis numbers and insurance. The official also identified the driver involved in the hit-and-run as Basudev Roy, assuring residents that action would be taken.
