Agartala, 5th September 2024: The Tripura Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed a congratulatory motion lauding the BJP-led NDA government for securing a third consecutive term in the Lok Sabha elections under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The motion, introduced on the second day of the Assembly session by Speaker Biswabandhu Sen, praised the NDA’s historic achievement in the 18th Lok Sabha elections.
However, the motion sparked controversy, leading to a heated debate and an eventual walkout by opposition parties. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury (CPIM) opposed the motion, arguing that the views expressed in it did not reflect the sentiments of the political leaders or the people of Tripura. Chaudhury further criticized the decision to introduce such a motion without consulting the Business Advisory Committee or engaging in discussions with opposition party leaders.
“The drafting of this congratulatory motion should have been done in consultation with political parties, as the people of Tripura and the nation do not fully endorse it,” Chaudhury remarked during his objection.
Despite these protests, Speaker Sen proceeded with the reading of the motion, prompting opposition members, including Chaudhury, Congress MLAs Sudip Roy Barman, and Gopal Chandra Roy, to voice their strong dissent. In a show of protest, opposition leaders stormed the well of the house and eventually staged a brief walkout.
In response, members of the treasury bench, led by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath, countered the opposition’s objections by chanting slogans such as “Vishwa Guru,” expressing their support for the motion.
Despite the opposition’s walkout, the motion was successfully adopted. The congratulatory statement emphasized the importance of elections in India as a democratic festival, acknowledging that 65.79 percent of the electorate had cast their votes in the 18th Lok Sabha elections. The motion further commended the electorate for once again placing their trust in the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, resulting in the formation of a stable NDA government for a third term.
