Agartala, 1st November 2024: Ambassa is currently witnessing a political storm within its Municipal Council. Following the swearing-in of the new chairman of Ambassa Municipal Council Pratima Malakar, a series of allegations and counter-allegations have erupted leading to significant tension.
The controversy began when newly elected Chairman Pratima Malakar announced Uttam Adhikari as the new vice-chairman, despite the current Vice-Chairman Gopal Sutradhar still holding the position. This decision led to an outburst from Sutradhar, who accused Adhikari and Shankar Chakraborty of misconduct.
In response, Uttam Adhikari and Shankar Chakraborty held a press conference on Thursday to refute Sutradhar’s claims. “We did not talk about removing the nameplate of Vice Chairman Gopal Sutradhar, nor did we remove it. His allegations are completely false,” stated Shankar Chakraborty. He further condemned the accusations of physical abuse as baseless and concocted. “Gopal Babu is making personal attacks to gain sympathy. If any allegations against us can be proved, we will resign from the party immediately,” Chakraborty added.
Uttam Adhikari accused Gopal Sutradhar of corrupt practices within the council over the past few years. “After taking the oath, the chairman announced my name as the new vice chairman to facilitate work, which angered Gopal Sutradhar,” Adhikari explained. He also raised concerns about the lack of CPC meetings in the past 14 months and alleged that Sutradhar had been spending money without the approval of the finance standing committee.
Adhikari and Chakraborty have appealed to the Chief Minister to form an inquiry committee to investigate the allegations of financial embezzlement against Sutradhar. “The dignity of the entire Ambassa Municipal Council is being undermined due to the actions of Vice Chairman Gopal Sutradhar,” Adhikari stated.
The ongoing conflict has created a buzz among the general public in Ambassa, raising questions about the party’s ideology and leadership. It remains to be seen how the situation will be resolved and whether the state leadership will intervene to address the issues.
