Agartala, 4th November 2024: Tension escalated in the Bholagiri area of Agartala yesterday night as a bloody altercation broke out between two local families over alleged drug trafficking activities, leaving 8 to 9 people from both sides injured.
The incident, which took place between the families of Shahjahan Mia and Abhijit Deb, has led to counter cases being filed at the NCC police station. The West District Superintendent of Police confirmed the details while visiting the site of the violence.
Police sources said that the conflict allegedly stems from disputes over competing illegal trade operations, with Shahjahan Mia’s family reportedly involved in the sale of brown sugar, while Abhijit Deb’s family deals in imported liquor.
A few days before the altercation, a local club had convened a meeting with both families, attempting to mediate peace and address community concerns over their illicit activities. However, this intervention proved insufficient.
The feud reached a boiling point when Shahjahan Mia, along with associates including Uttam Malakar, launched an attack on Abhijit Deb’s family. Members of the Deb family, including Abhijit, reportedly fought back in an attempt to protect themselves, leading to a brutal fight that injured 7 to 8 individuals from both sides.
The injured were immediately taken to GB Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical care. The NCC police, along with CRPF personnel, arrived promptly at the scene to control the situation and prevent further escalation. The District Superintendent of Police assured residents that the area has returned to normalcy but emphasized that police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
