Agartala, 13th November 2024:  In a significant crackdown, Tripura Police intercepted a passenger bus traveling from Dharmanagar to Karimganja, Assam, and seized 5.7 kilograms of cannabis concealed on a passenger.

The passenger, identified as Munna Sharma, a young man from Baishali district in Bihar, was apprehended at the Churaibari Naka Point checkpoint.

Acting on suspicion, the police halted the bus and conducted a thorough search, uncovering the cannabis, estimated at a black-market value of around Rs 60,000, strapped to Sharma’s body. According to the police, this is the second time Sharma has been caught by authorities while attempting to transport cannabis from Tripura to Bihar. During his first journey, he reportedly managed to evade police detection.

Sharma admitted to reporters that he sourced the cannabis from Khejur Bagan of Agartala area at a price of Rs 4,500 and aimed to sell it in Bihar for Rs 10,000 per kilogram, capitalizing on the region’s black-market demand.

Officer-in-Charge Khokon Saha stated that a case will be filed under section 47/24 and Section 22(B)(ii)(B)/29 of the NDPS Act. Police intend to seek his remand from the Dharmanagar court, anticipating further details on this smuggling network through additional interrogations.
