Agartala, 18th November 2024:   The tribal students staged a protest in front of the Directorate of Tribal Welfare here at Gorkhabasti demanding the immediate resumption of their scholarships. The students warned that they would sit on a dharna in the coming days if the stipends were not paid promptly.

One of the protesting students expressed their frustration, stating, “We have not received our scholarships for two long years. This scholarship is very important for us because we bear the cost of our education with this money. All the B.Ed students are continuing their studies outside the state with the scholarship money and are now facing various problems due to not getting the scholarship.”

The students alleged that they have been given excuses about the scholarship in several offices. “The official of the department assured us that the outstanding scholarships would be settled within a week, but it has been two weeks now, and there is still no change,” said another student.

Adding to their woes, the students mentioned that their college has asked them to deposit all their first semester exam fees by the first week of December this year. “If the Tribal Welfare Department does not clear our outstanding scholarships, how will we pay the exam fees?” questioned a concerned student.

The protest highlights the critical importance of timely scholarship payments for tribal students, who rely on these funds to continue their education. The students are urging the Janjati Kalyan department to take immediate action to resolve the issue and ensure that their scholarships are disbursed without further delay.
