Agartala, 8th April 2025: In a significant move to spur industrial growth in Tripura, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a loan of $85.4 million aimed at upgrading critical infrastructure across the state’s industrial estates. The initiative seeks to enhance Tripura’s manufacturing competitiveness, generate employment, and enable smoother integration into regional and global value chains.
The newly sanctioned Tripura Industrial Infrastructure Development (TIDC) Project is an extension of ADB’s ongoing engagement with India on industrial and economic corridor development.
According to a press release issued by ADB, the project follows a preparatory phase where a project readiness financing loan was extended to the Tripura government. This initial phase laid the foundation for inclusive, integrated, and sustainable industrial infrastructure in nine targeted industrial estates. ADB’s technical support also contributed to shaping a new industrial policy aimed at improving the overall business climate in the state.
Sameer Khatiwada, ADB’s Senior Public Sector Economist, pointed out that the state has long struggled with inadequate infrastructure, limiting its appeal to private manufacturers. “This project bridges a crucial gap by boosting transport, electricity, water supply, and sanitation infrastructure while simultaneously strengthening institutional mechanisms that support industrial development,” Khatiwada said.
The comprehensive infrastructure upgrade plan includes the development of climate-resilient roads, advanced stormwater drainage systems, culverts, and rainwater harvesting units. Energy efficiency will be a key focus, with the installation of modern power distribution systems, solar facilities, and smart street lighting. Other features include fire stations, weighbridges, robust security systems, and upgraded sanitation amenities.
In a progressive step towards sustainable transportation, the project will introduce compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles within key industrial estates, supported by strategically located charging stations.
The project also places a strong emphasis on women’s participation in the workforce. It sets aside at least 300 square meters of land in each estate for enterprises led by women and includes dedicated daycare centers and gender help desks. Training programs and facility management roles will be specifically tailored to empower women through meaningful employment opportunities.
