Amrita Pritam’s Ek Rumaal, Ek Anguthi, Ek Chalni to be staged at Kolkata Centre for Creativity

Date:

Kolkata Centre for Creativity in association with The Mocking bird presents EkRumaal, EkAnguthi, EkChalni, a mesmerizing solo play based on a story penned by the celebrated author Amrita Pritam at KCC Amphitheatre here on January 20.

Directed by Shubham Tiwari and featuring theatre and film actress Gunjan Jain, this performance beautifully encapsulates themes of love, longing, and loss.

The play has various content like poetry, couplets and songs by famous poets Shiv Kumar Batalvi (a contemporary of Amrita Pritam), Ghalib, Bulleh Shah, Amrita Pritam and BhartenduKashyap. The play adopts a minimalist set design comprising a book rack, table, chair, an angithi (clay stove), and two stools. It also incorporates the iconic ‘Three Girls’ painting by avant-garde artist Amrita Sher-Gill.

The play commences with the melancholic Punjabi folk song ‘Ekkkudijidaannaammohabbat, gum hai, gum hai…’ penned by veteran poet Shiv Kumar Batalvi. To add to the play’s depth, the director has intertwined serene songs and music seamlessly. Gunjan Jain’s adept portrayal of multiple characters, evident through her expressions and voice modulation, elevates the performance.

Richa Agarwal, Chairperson, Kolkata Centre for Creativity (KCC) said, “KCC is committed to providing a platform for artists and audiences to engage with a diverse range of art forms, and I’m thrilled to know that we are presenting this mesmerizing award-winning solo play based on a story penned by the celebrated Amrita Pritam. The play offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience the depth of Amrita Pritam’s work through her poignant letters within the play.”

“Notably, this play, which received the second prize at the Big Shot Solo Theatre Festival, incorporates a rich tapestry of content like poetry, couplets and songs by famous poets Shiv Kumar Batalvi (a contemporary of Amrita Pritam), Ghalib, Bulleh Shah, and Amrita Pritam herself. My hope is that audiences will cherish this theatrical masterpiece that encapsulates themes of love, longing, and loss,” Richa added.
