Agartala, 10th December 2025: A joint operation by police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) led to the seizure of a Maruti car loaded with cannabis during a highway check in the Amtali area.
According to officials, the vehicle was signaled to stop during routine inspection, but the driver attempted to flee at high speed towards Bishalgarh. Acting swiftly, a police team led by Anti-Narcotics SP Shyamananda Sharma, Amtali SDPO Paramita Pandey, and Amtali Police Station OC Paritosh Das pursued the car. The chase ended at Chaumuhani Bazaar, where the vehicle was intercepted.
The driver identified as Akash Barman of Konaban under Madhupur police station tried to escape but was arrested. A search of the vehicle revealed a large quantity of dried cannabis.
Soon after, a forensic team and representatives of the Sadar subdivision administration arrived at the scene. In the presence of Bikramnagar Tehsildar Alok Chakraborty, forensic experts examined the case. Police later confirmed the recovery of 94 kilograms of cannabis.
Barman is currently being interrogated at Amtali Police Station. Sources said investigators are probing whether others are involved in the smuggling network.
