Agartala, 25th October 2025:   Acting on a tip-off, police from Bishalgarh Police Station seized ₹15 lakh in cash and a large quantity of Phensedyl from a vehicle late last night, triggering widespread concern in the area.

The operation led by Officer-in-Charge Ajit Debbarma involved intercepting a suspicious vehicle during a late-night patrol. Upon conducting a thorough search, officers recovered three packets of cash concealed beneath the car seats.

Senior officials, including Sepahijala District Additional Superintendent of Police Rajib Sutradhar and Sonamura Sub-Divisional Police Officer Shashi Mohan Debbarma, rushed to the scene. In their presence, the seized money was counted using a currency counting machine under CCTV surveillance. Police confirmed that the majority of the recovered notes were in ₹500 denominations, totaling ₹15 lakh.

Further investigation into the source of the cash led authorities to uncover a significant stash of Phensedyl, a cough syrup often misused as a narcotic. The vehicle’s occupants Santanu Saha, a cloth trader from Sukantapalli in Melaghar, and driver Shahin Mia from Chandigarh area of Melaghar were unable to produce any legal documentation for the cash.

The duo, reportedly en route from Melaghar to Agartala, has been taken into custody for interrogation. The seizure has sparked considerable public interest and concern in Bishalgarh and surrounding areas. Police have launched a full-scale investigation to trace the origin of the money and the contraband.
